With humour and great affection, Cecil Aldin  painted his doggy subjects so expressively that the viewer can all but hear a dog's heavy sigh as he settles himself on the sofa.

 

Arthur Wardle, self-taught and hugely talented, was another dog artist who managed to capture the nature of the beast - whether that beast is dog, tiger or wild child, playing tug of war with his collie in the surf.
