The Elegant English Setter

Dignified English SetterLike all the setter breeds, the English Setter is a beautiful dog to look at. Perhaps a little more stately than its cousin the Red Setter which does have a reputation to be a wee bit scatty, the English Setter's coat has a white base which carries speckles of black, brown, lemon or orange.

This is a friendly breed considered to be calm, gentle and affectionate though as gun dogs they are also athletic and need ample exercise.

For a family with children willing to involve their dog in outings and family activities, an English Setter would make an excellent companion though as it is considered to have a soft temperament both kids and adults should be aware to keep training and play positive in order not to create a nervous dog.

With their soft white speckled coat and long feathers, English Setters do need quite a bit of grooming to keep their coats in top condition. It seems like every twig and burr in the landscape gets brushed up into the silky feathers but a well groomed English Setter in action is a joy to behold. Certainly, no English Setter owner on the planet would grudge the time spent on keeping his or her four legged friend looking his best.

If you are considering welcoming an English Setter into your family, you might first want to see if any are available through the rescue organisations.
